“Breaking bad news: lessons learnt from ORBITA”
ORBITA was the first placebo controlled trial of angioplasty in coronary artery disease. The results were surprising and shocked the cardiology community. Published in The Lancet in 2017, ORBITA is one of the most talked about cardiology trials from this decade. It was not only the subject of multiple editorials in medical journals but also featured in articles in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and CNN.
The lead author Rasha Al-Lamee will discuss the real story of ORBITA from multiple funding rejections, to the real life stories of the dedicated ORBITA patients, to dealing with the fallout after delivering the results at the largest Interventional Cardiology conference. The lessons learnt for the ORBITA trial are widely applicable to all scientists, researchers and clinicians.
