Close to 300 delegates took part in the 10th Health Services and Policy Research Conference (HSRAANZ17) at the Gold Coast 1-3 November, to hear from international keynote speakers, including AusHSI visiting fellow Dr Roman Kislov. The program included a stimulating range of five themed plenary discussions and a diverse program of delegate concurrent sessions.
Delegates attended pre-conference workshops, including a sold-out research translation workshop, as well as various breakfast sessions, and mingled their way through the two social events. ECR’s were well catered for, with a number of networking and learning experiences on offer, and separate streams of Indigenous sessions which spoke to indigenous specific research themes.
On opening day, AusHSI asked the question of delegates: What’s your health fix, with winning answers touching on the role of clinical leadership and reducing low-value care and moving patient data with the patient. Each will be rewarded with an AusHSI short course, or HSRAANZ membership.
The conference also awarded ‘best of’ daily tweets, with copies of AusHSI Adjunct Professors Gill Harvey and Alison Kitson’s well-regarded implementation book as prizes. As one recipient noted #beachread!
AusHSI PhD candidate Tori McCreanor was a winner of one of the daily ‘best oral poster’ awards, speaking to a plenary audience on Day 3 of the conference. This new format of poster + 3-minute talk saw nearly 60 speakers offered a chance to present their work to the conference audience.
AusHSI colleagues Sonya Osborne and Greg Merlo presented to the conference, with AusHSI Clinical Director Will Parsonage involved in a number of delegate presented sessions.
HSRAANZ drew to a close with some ‘blood-letting’, as we closed the event with a first-ever Shark Tank plenary session. Four pitching teams fronted four Sharks, asking for investment in real-world health service innovations. With teams representing local HHS’s and research institutes, the Sharks came from the state and Federal health systems, and included a consumer perspective.
