AusHSI researchers join new NHMRC Committees

Two researchers at the Australian Centre for Health Services Innovation (AusHSI), Professor Anne Chang AM and Professor Adrian Barnett, have been announced as members of the Research Committee, a Principal Committee of the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), for 2024 to 2027. AusHSI Adjunct Professor Ginny Barbour, who is also Editor in Chief for the Medical Journal of Australia, has been appointed to the NHMRC-Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) Public Health and Health Systems Committee.
Playing a critical role in helping shape and advance health and medical research in Australia, the Research Committee draws on the expertise and experience of people from across the health system, research sector and the community. Committee members are appointed by the Minister for Health and Aged Care, the Hon. Mark Butler MP.
NHMRC’s Research Committee advises on the quality and scope of health and medical research in Australia, including the use of research funding through the NHMRC’s grant program, helping to set research priorities, and considering innovations in peer review.
Professor Anne Chang AM, AusHSI Program Lead: Cough and Airways Research, was a member of the NHMRC Health Research Impact Committee and the Women in Health Science Committee from 2021 to 2024.
“It’s an honour to be invited into the committee. Through the committee and with others, I hope to be able to contribute to improving the many aspects of research and its translation for the betterment of Australia’s health and beyond.” said Professor Chang.
Professor Adrian Barnett, Statistics and Data Analysis lead at AusHSI, will continue on the NHMRC Research Committee following his previous appointment in 2021.
“I enjoy the challenges of working on the NHMRC Research Committee. Australia has many great researchers who are working hard to improve lives, and I hope our work on the Research Committee can help the research community to continue and expand this vitally important work.” Professor Barnett said.
Membership of the NHMRC Research Committee brings together expertise in biomedical science, clinical and public health, nursing, ethics, social sciences, healthcare training and the medical profession, as well as business and consumer perspectives, and expertise in the health needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The Research Committee supports the NHMRC Council and provides expert advice reflecting a wide range of perspectives to the Chief Executive Officer, Professor Steve Wesselingh.
Announced as a member of the NHMRC-MRFF Public Health and Health Systems Committee, Adjunct Professor Ginny Barbour will provide advice on strategies for strengthening preventive health and public health, primary care and health services, and for embedding research translation in the health system.
The shared NHMRC-MRFF committee will also provide strategic advice on barriers to the uptake of research evidence within the Australian health system, as well as clinical trials and cohort studies, to strengthen the linkages between both clinical and research practice.
